If you’re looking for something fun and new to do in our area in the month of May, check out these festivals that are happening just a few miles down the road! They all have something for everyone in the family, and they might even get you out of yard work for the weekend.

  • Mayfest – May 1-4

    Fort Worth, TX

    Located 115 miles from Wichita Falls, this celebration stretches along the Trinity River and has something for everyone in the family. Visitors will enjoy live entertainment, duck races, children’s activities, a dog and pony show, craft brews for the adults, and a whole lot more.   • 31st Annual Electra Goat BBQ Cook-Off – May 9-10

    Electra, TX

    Electra is located just 27 miles away from the Falls, so it’s a quick and easy trip. Not only will you have the opportunity to sample some delicious BBQ, $3,000 worth of prize money will be awarded. There are six events at the cook-off: Goat, chicken, ribs, brisket, and jackpot beans & steak. The kids will also have a great time with games and craft booths, then enjoy a free dance on Friday night featuring The Steven Staley Band! Want more info?   • Audie Murphy: Salute to the Military – May 16-17

    Greenville, TX

    A little bit further away than other festivals seen here, Greenville is located 162 miles away from Wichita Falls but packs a lot of punch into their festivals. The celebration honors the military as well as Audie Murphy, who came back a decorated war hero after WWII. You’ll hear from veterans, enjoy music, a film medley, and see exhibits at The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum.   • Dallas Comic Con – May 16-18

    Dallas, TX

    The 140 mile drive is worth the time spent when Stan Lee and William Shatner are making appearances. This event has something for everyone from comic enthusiasts to those simply curious about Comic Con. You’re sure to see fans in amazing costumes, check out cool displays, and do lots of entertaining people-watching. Over 600 retailers will be present, and you’ll even get a chance to purchase original artwork from comic artists themselves. Get more info and buy your tickets early on the Comic Con Web site.

  • 8th Annual DFW Dragon Boat, Kite & Lantern Festival – May 18

    Irving, TX

    Lots of fun is to be had after a 130 mile trek to Irving for this festival. Visitors will enjoy Dragon Boat racing, kite flying demos, a kite flying competition, cultural performances, ethnic food, lantern displays, and a whole lot more. The event is family friendly and free to the public, and includes hourly raffle drawings with cool prizes.
