Bored? Try Geocaching!

I’ve heard talk lately about how there’s not much to do in the Wichita Falls area. Because I’ve only been here for about a year and a half, I may look at things differently because people become bored with their surroundings after a certain period of time. Or, it could be that I know my time in this area is limited to about 5 years, so I want to soak in as much of it as I can.

There’s a wealth of things to do in Wichita Falls if you know where to look. Among other things, we have the arts, amazing parks, events lined up year-round, and weather that allows us to barbeque in January. Trust me, I’m from North Dakota… we never barbequed in January up there.

When we lived up north, a friend introduced us to something called geocaching –

Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online.

And it’s a lot of fun…

Basically you take a hand-held GPS unit, probably something you could do on your smart phone, look up your latitude and longitude coordinates on a geocaching web site, and voila! You’re off to your own little adventure. There are hundreds of spots in Wichita Falls alone that you can check out. Plus, you’re almost always awarded with a prize.

Granted, the prize typically isn’t anything big. We’re talking about a bouncy-ball or a toy Army man or perhaps a silver dollar. When you take something, however, you leave something. We usually take along a key chain or some small item when we go, something that can easily be tucked into the cache when it’s found.

So what does a cache look like? Usually it’s a coffee can or a peanut butter jar, painted in camo colors to blend in with the scenery. When you find it, though, it’s kind of like finding gold. It’s fun, it’s something different, and it’s virtually free. Plus, you’ll always be able to track down a new cache every time.

Has anyone else out there tried this?
