Pet food company Party Animal has announced a recall after a drug used in euthanasia was reportedly discovered in their products in Texas.

According to their statement, the company was told by a retailer in Texas that a customer had provided lab results confirming the presence of phenobarbital in two types of their food,

On April 13, a retailer in Texas notified us that their customer had presented samples of our 13-ounce-can Cocolicious Beef & Turkey dog food (Lot #0136E15204 04, best by July 2019) and 13-ounce-can Cocolicious Chicken & Beef dog food (Lot #0134E15 237 13, best by August 2019) to a testing lab, and that the results had tested positive for phenobarbital. We have requested those results.

Party Animal confirms that the initial tests were performed by a lab at Texas A&M, but they have asked for the remaining unsold product from those lots to be returned so further tests can be performed by an independent lab. In smaller doses, phenobarbital can be used to treat insomnia and epilepsy, but higher doses are used in the euthanasia of pets.

The potentially affected lots were produced in 2015, and consumers are encouraged to check their cans to see if they came from the listed lots, returning the cans to the store to the refund if they are.
