  • Famed songwriter Harlan Howard died in Nashville at age 74 in 2002. He had charted Number One country hits in every decade from the '50s to the '90s and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997.
  • George Strait played the final Houston Livestock & Rodeo Show concert held at Houston's Astrodome, with more than 68,000 in attendance, in 2002.
