In the spring of 2013, Daniel Tosh aired a segment on his show where he purchased a number of “somethings” from The Something Store. The concept is simple – you send them $10 and they send you something. It might be a scarf, a pair of sunglasses, a remote controlled helicopter, or even a Kindle, but whatever they send out should have an MSRP of at least $10. I had to try it for myself, and thought I would share with you my experience from The Something Store.

When Tosh ordered from the Web site, they opened a number of items. Among them was indeed a Kindle, though the skeptic in me wonders if that was set up. What can you expect if you order your own something? Here’s what their Web site states:

It may be something you need, something you want or something you desire. Your something may be a cool shiny gadget, rare book, party game, handmade necklace, reverse clock, box of gourmet chocolates, popular video game, portable table tennis set, pashmina scarf, set of kitchen knives, pair of handmade earrings, garden tool, kitchen appliance, unique home decor item, electronic equipment, fine crafting tool or an office supply item... Your something will be a brand new item; not used or refurbished.

I wasn’t really motivated to buy something myself until a friend of mine ordered two somethings and announced it on Facebook. Jealous, I wanted my own something and I figured I’ve spent $10 on worse things. I placed my order (shipping is included) and waited for just over a week, anxious to find out what I would get.

During my wait I decided to find out what other people have received as their something, so I turned to YouTube. I found dozens of videos with people opening their packages, and here’s what I learned. While my research is FAR from scientific, it would appear that the majority of purchases to The Something Store will receive a scarf, a wallet, or jewelry. Other users received driving glasses for nighttime hours, a safety vest complete with reflective tape, and even a mini Chia Pet looking egg. It makes sense that most users would receive lower end items, that way the company can afford to send out the higher priced items from time to time.

So what did I get? Jewelry wrapped in a pretty, decorative box. It’s a pair of earrings that are kind of cute, so I might even wear them someday. Rounding out the most commonly sent items, my friend who had also ordered received a scarf and a wallet. No big ticket items this time for us.

I still think it’s a fun concept and I would do it again. If you’re really stuck on what to buy someone as a gift, order a something for them and hand it over without even seeing what you’re giving them. It gets you off the hook because it’s a fun concept, and all you paid was $10.

Have you ever ordered from The Something Store?
