Turning water into wine is so passe.

Scientists at Belgium’s University of Ghent have figured out a way to turn urine into drinking water, which pales in comparison to their other accomplishment: turning urine into beer.

Before we get into the science of beer emanating from your pee, it’s important to know how water comes from it, first. According to Reuters:

The urine is collected in a big tank, heated in a solar-powered boiler before passing through [a] membrane where the water is recovered and nutrients such as potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus are separated.

Now, researchers have their eye on a bigger prize than just H2O.

Sebastiaan Derese, one of the brains behind this operation, says, “We’re planning on brewing a beer from it. There’s a project...called From Sewer to Brewer.”

Yeah, they want to take your urine and make it into beer, which is ironic, considering when you drink beer you wind up having to pee. Why not just cut out the middle man and drink your pee when hit the head during a night at your favorite watering hole?

It’s just a little something to think about the next time you’re drinking. Or, to put it more accurately, the next time you knock back a cold one it might be from going number one.
