Not only is everything bigger in Texas, but faster now too.

Texas has approved a plan to open a new highway, about 35 miles northeast of San Antonio, with the highest speed limit in the country.

The Texas Transportation Commission has approved an 85 mph speed limit for a 41-mile stretch of toll road between Austin and San Antonio.

Although many may be thrilled to let loose and zip across central texas, some are asking if it is safe.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is against this new highway.  A spokesman said,

The research is clear that when speed limits go up, fatalities go up."

Yahoo Autos reports, "Agency officials had previously said they would study the toll road's topography, the speeds that most drivers were reaching, and the safety of access points and cross sections before approving the 85 mph speed limit."

An agency spokeswoman, Veronica Beyer said,

Safety is our top priority and tests have shown the designated speed is a safe one."

Right now there are highways in west Texas and Utah that have 80 mile-per-hour speed limits, but America no longer has any roads with NO speed limit, like the autobahn in Germany. The new toll road running from Austin to Sequin will be the first to allow an 85 mph speed limit when it opens in November.
