Why are we seeing a rainbow around the Sun?

Ever wondered why there's a rainbow around the Sun? Well, it's not really a rainbow, but something called a halo. Halos are like bright rings of light that appear around the sun or the moon. They happen when the sunlight or moonlight passes through tiny ice crystals in thin clouds called cirrus clouds.

Scientist Michael Kavulich from the National Center for Atmospheric Research explains that this halo is not caused by raindrops like in a regular rainbow, according to this article. Instead, it happens because of ice crystals. Unlike raindrops, which are round, these ice crystals have six sides, just like snowflakes.

Halos, the cosmic party crashers that turn the sky into a dazzling light show. Who knew the universe had such a flair for dramatic entrances? Stay fabulous, celestial phenomena!

So, the next time you see a ring of light around the Sun, you can impress your friends by telling them it's a halo caused by special ice crystals in the clouds!
