What Do Your Facebook Posts Say About Your Personality?

We post a lot of details about our lives on social networks. Things about work, family, hobbies, and of course pictures of cats. If someone were to just look at what you post on Facebook, what would they be able to tell about you as a person?

That’s exactly what the team at Five Labs is trying to find out with their new online tool that analyzes your Facebook posts to access your personality. If you grant them access to analyze your posts, they look for specif words and use those to create a chart of your personality type. Here’s what mine looked like:

They form your graph based on 5 different personality traits, often referred to as the “Big Five.”

Openness: Appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, curiosity, and variety of experience. Openness reflects the degree of intellectual curiosity, creativity and a preference for novelty and variety a person has. It is also described as the extent to which a person is imaginative or independent, and depicts a personal preference for a variety of activities over a strict routine

Extraversion: Energy, positive emotions, surgency, assertiveness, sociability and the tendency to seek stimulation in the company of others, and talkativeness.

Aggreeableness: A tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others. It is also a measure of one’s trusting and helpful nature, and whether a person is generally well tempered or not.

Conscientiousness: A tendency to be organized and dependable, show self-discipline, act dutifully, aim for achievement, and prefer planned rather than spontaneous behavior.

Neuroticism: The tendency to experience unpleasant emotions easily, such as anger, anxiety, depression, and vulnerability. Neuroticism also refers to the degree of emotional stability and impulse control.

Once you have your personality traits, you can go in and compare yourself to how different celebrities and public figures came out. You can also see which of your friends are most and least like you.

I wouldn’t say that it’s 100% scientifically accurate. For example, mine came out pretty low on extraversion when really I’m a very social person. I just don’t post a lot of things on my facebook about my friends. On the other hand, there are certain parts that definitely reflect how I am in real life. The 5 words it used to describe me are pretty spot on: spontaneous • inventive • restless • reserved • analytical.

Give it a chance yourself and see what it has to say about you. Just go to the Five Labs tool and log in using your facebook page.
