When it comes to shortening someone's name, there are some times where it just makes sense. We can all understand why someone named Andrew can be called Drew or Andy. The same goes for Christopher being Chris or Katherine being Kathy.

There's one shortened name that doesn't seem near as obvious, though. Why is the name Richard shortened to Dick? Does it have anything to do with the slang term? Was it an insult? Where did this tradition come from.
