Somebody has some 'splainin' to do!

A demolition company hired by the City of Fort Worth has accidentally torn down a three-bedroom home in northwest Fort Worth rather than the condemned building next door.

The Star-Telegram reports that Fort Worth Councilman Dennis Shingleton said, “It’s obviously a series of mistakes, and we’re working to be right by it."

The property owners of the demolished house, David Underwood and his wife, planned on moving into the now nonexistent house in the Lake Worth area . The lakeside land once belonged to Underwood's grandmother and has been in the family for decades. Underwood bought it from an aunt earlier this year.

The couple had been on a trip to Boston and hadn't been by the house in nearly a month, but when they stopped by to mow the lawn Saturday, they found the home was gone. A slab of foundation and a mailbox with the address is all that remains.

The city issued a statement that said, “On July 12, 2013, contractors demolished the wrong property on Watercress Drive. The property to be demolished should have been 9708 Watercress Dr. The property that was demolished was a vacant structure located at 9716 Watercress Drive. City staff is meeting to determine what happened.”

Underwood is seeking a settlement from the city. A city spokesman says officials are investigating. The wrecked house was a 1300-square-foot, three bedroom, one bath home with a Tarrant County appraisal value of $122,200.

The condemned structure remains standing.
