Abby Anderson Excited for the Challenge of Rob Thomas' Tour

Abby Anderson is going on a non-country tour this summer, and she couldn't be more excited. The "Good Lord" singer says the 44 dates with Rob Thomas present a challenge and an opportunity.

"It's a nervous excitement," she tells Taste of Country. "I don't know if these people listen to country music. I'm sure they do because I listen to pop and I'm a country music artist … and I think good music is good music."

Thomas' Chip Tooth Smile Tour begins on May 28 in New Jersey and lasts well into the summer. Along the way find Anderson playing fairs and festivals. She played Stagecoach Festival for the very first time last month.

The age thing is where one is tempted to go quickly, as the 22-year-old was just toddling around Texas when the 47-year-old Thomas first hit it big with his group Matchbox 20. "Bent" and "Unwell" are their two most well-known songs. She hasn't met him yet, but she is an OG fan.

"I was introduced to Rob Thomas’ music forever ago," Anderson says, naming ...Something to Be (2005) and Cradlesong (2009) era albums as her favorites, "and then I was like, 'Oh, he was in a band back in the day!'" This is when Anderson lets out a big laugh, something the easygoing, soulful country singer is prone to do often. It's part of why she's so much fun to follow on social media. The newcomer is a smile waiting to happen.

"I've been dating this guy for the past year," she says, changing subjects to talk about her new single "Good Lord," "and I’m just a 22-year-old in love and apparently I want the world to know about it." There's another big laugh that leads into how she, Josh Kerr and Jordan Minton wrote the song.

"They had met him a few times before. I go to soundcheck, I come back and they had the first part of the chorus written and I look at them and I'm like, 'Y'all got a crush on him too. He's mine!'" [Laughs]

It's not clear if or when a new EP or full album will be released — Anderson has been releasing new music piecemeal thus far, but says if you're looking for her truest sound, check out "Good Lord" or "I'm Good," the title track of her 2018 EP. Recently she also cut a version of "Shallow" with her good friend Jimmie Allen.
