2019 belongs to the bad boys (and women). Not only are Will Smith and Martin Lawrence finally filming the third Bad Boys film, Bad Boys For Life, there’s a female-driven spinoff, L.A.’s Finest, that’s headed to TV screens starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. You can watch the trailer above.

Here’s the official synopsis:

From the universe of the Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay “Bad Boys” franchise, "L.A.'s Finest" follows Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret. Taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles while skirting the rules, and speed limits, Syd and Nancy become a force to be reckoned with – on the streets, and in each other’s lives.

Union played Martin Lawrence’s sister in Bad Boys II. She was also having a secret relationship with Will Smith’s character, which caused friction between the partners once the truth came to light. Presumably, things between Smith’s Mike Lowry and Union’s Syd Burnett didn’t work out, since Syd is now a member of the LAPD. Even without Smith and Lawrence, the show does look like it has a similar vibe, at least from the trailer.

I’m not sure why they called this L.A.’s Finest instead of the obvious Bad Girls; maybe someone else had a trademark on that title or something. The trailer notes that “the first three installments in the 13-episode series will be exclusively available to Spectrum video subscribers free On Demand (and without ads) on May 13, after which new episodes will release every Monday until the finale.”
