I sat down with drummer Mike Hardison to talk about Baylor Roseone of Wichita Falls’ newest and most promising bands, ahead of their first headlining show at the Iron Horse Pub on October 18.

Hardison, who’s known for his work with multiple local groups including Blank Labels and the Hattons, described Baylor Rose as something special: a collaboration of experienced musicians who share a love for songwriting, harmony, and good old-fashioned live performance.

“We’ve got a blessing of a roster,” Hardison said, smiling. “You’ve got Bryson Lawrence, an incredible vocalist from Blank Labels. Angel Perez on guitar, the guy’s ridiculously talented, and then we brought in Jay Burnam, who’s an amazing songwriter and singer. He’s actually playing bass for us, which isn’t even his main instrument.”

The lineup is rounded out by another well-known local musician, singer-songwriter Zack Crow. Together, the band blends rich harmonies and a variety of styles, from southern rock and 90s country to modern Texas country, creating a sound that’s both nostalgic and fresh.

Hardison said one of the goals when forming Baylor Rose was to make the vocals a centerpiece.

“I wanted us to be singer-focused,” he explained. “Three-part, even four-part harmonies if we can. That’s what gives songs that depth, that texture people really connect with.”

Their sets include everything from Eagles and John Mellencamp classics to Brooks & Dunn and newer Texas country influences. The band plans to head into the studio by the end of the year to start recording original material, something Hardison says they’re eager to share.

“The songwriting is really where our hearts are,” he said. “We’ve been working hard on stuff that feels honest and sounds great live. We can’t wait for people to hear it.”

The October 18 show at the Iron Horse Pub marks a major milestone for Baylor Rose: their first time headlining at one of Wichita Falls’ most beloved live music venues. Fans can also expect a few familiar faces to drop in, including fellow local artists James Cook, Clint Vines, and Bailey Hatton.

“It’s going to be a great night,” Hardison said. “We’re hoping to have a bunch of friends jump up on stage with us. It’s all about having fun and celebrating the music community we’ve built here.”

Between his commitments with Blank Labels, Baylor Rose, The Hattons, and a Paramore tribute band, Hardison admits downtime is rare. But for him, the grind is worth it.

“It’s been rough, sure,” he laughed, “but I love it. Every project brings something different.”

Fans can catch Baylor Rose at the Iron Horse Pub on Friday, October 18, for what promises to be an energetic night of music, collaboration, and community.
