The State Fair of Texas has always been the epicenter of deep fried food innovation in the U.S. - and likely the world.  So why would this year be any different?

One of the finalists for the Big Tex Choice Award for the best new food this year is deep-fried Nutella.

If you've never heard of Nutella, it's a chocolate hazelnut spread. And it's delicious.

For the deep fried version, Nutella is mixed with cream cheese, spread over dough, rolled, and dropped in the fryer. It's served with honey and almonds.

Its biggest competition this year is a fried Thanksgiving dinner, which is stuffing and turkey rolled in a ball, dipped in creamed corn, covered in corn meal, fried, and served with gravy and cranberry sauce.

The other competitors for the Big Tex Choice Award are a deep-fried Cuban roll, deep-fried pie, deep-fried spinach and artichoke dip bites, deep-fried meatloaf, and deep-fried casserole. Last year's award winners were deep-fried Jambalaya (most creative) and fried bacon cinnamon roll (best taste)

You can try all of these deep-fried concoctions at the 2013 State Fair of Texas in Dallas Sept 27 - Oct 20.

It's been nice knowing you.
