Granger Smith Brings Wife Onstage to Serenade Her With ‘Happens Like That’ [Watch]
Granger Smith's latest single, "Happens Like That," was inspired by his wife, Amber, but he'd never had the chance to sing it directly to her.
Until this past weekend at a show at Billy Bob's Texas. Smith documented the moment — from the lead-up to his surprise performance — and shared it on Instagram. "I sing this song every night, but never to the girl I actually wrote it about ... until now," he says in the caption.
In the first clip, Smith reveals his plan to serenade the mother of his three children during the show in her hometown of Fort Worth. He sets the scene for viewers before it happens, revealing that he'll invite a couple up to the stage for a proposal before he calls his own wife to join him.
"It's about 5 o'clock in the morning and we've been gone for a while on tour, but this is a cool day," he says in the video. "We are in Little Rock, Arkansas, and I'm about to jump on a plane to go to Fort Worth, Texas, for a show but it's a special show because this is my wife's hometown. Her parents and friends are all going to be there. She's going to be there and I'm going to try to make it a special night, because she deserves that."
While he rehearses the moment that will occur later that evening, he says that he wrote "Happens Like That" about his wife. The video then cuts to him inviting Amber out to the stage as he gets on one knee and reenacts the night he proposed to her. The sweet three clips end with a kiss from his No. 1 girl — watch it all unfold as you swipe through the post above.
When he released "Happens Like That" as a single last year, Smith looked back fondly on the day he met Amber when she auditioned for one of his music videos in 2009. “When she walked in, that was it,” he admits. Seven months later, they were engaged and now have a family.
Smith co-wrote "Happens Like That" with Florida Georgia Line's Tyler Hubbard, Jordan Schmidt, Justin Wilson and Andy Albert. It's the lead single off his latest album, When the Good Guys Win.
