Saturday (April 27) was one of the year’s most active severe weather days we’ve had in this neck of the woods. There were multiple tornado warnings in Texas and Oklahoma. A tornado believed to at least be an EF3 tore through Sulphur, Oklahoma Saturday night, killing 4 people and leaving at least 100 injured.

The tornado that struck Sulphur was particularly dangerous because it struck at night, hiding in the darkness. The video below shows the moment storm chasers realized a tornado was tearing through the town when a power flash revealed it.

You hear one of the chasers frantically telling the other to call 9-1-1 to warn them of the confirmed tornado on the ground. You hear a lot of debate as to the accuracy of radar-revealed tornadoes. However, you can’t go wrong with eyewitness reports.

I can’t express my gratitude for storm chasers enough. They put their lives at risk in hopes of saving the lives of others. Sure, they get a hell of a rush from what they do. But at the end of the day, it’s all about keeping people safe.

We’re in the thick of tornado season right now. So, there’s likely to be plenty of wild weather over the next couple of months. Keep an eye and ear on local media and stay safe out there.
