One of the most important decisions Texas students make in their school career is choosing the college they want to attend after graduating high school. When choosing that college, so many different factors come into play.

Do they have a good program for what you want to study? How is campus life and the activities offered at the school? Location and proximity to home? I know I'm missing a bunch, but those are just a few students tend to look at.

However, one of the things that a lot of people don't think about is how SAFE is the college or university they want to attend. I can understand how this gets overlooked. Many are just excited about attending the school they've always wanted to go to.

Well if you're choosing a school in Texas, you need to take this into account. Texas is home to four of the top 20 dangerous schools in the country. Not exactly a glowing stat if you ask me.

In this survey, when we talk about violent crimes, we're referring to rape, murder/manslaughter, aggravated assault, and robbery. Also, the number of crimes posted is only those that happened ON-CAMPUS. Anything that happened off-campus or on public property wasn't included in these numbers.

Let's take a look at where these four schools rank, and why.

#19: UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON, CENTRAL CAMPUS

According to the survey from DegreeChoices, the University of Houston, Central Campus has had 88 violent crimes reported over three years. Sure, that number in the grand scheme of things doesn't seem TOO high for three years, but that's nearly 30 violent crimes per year.

#16: TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY, LUBBOCK

Well, I was hoping the panhandle would stay off this list, but here's Texas Tech popping up at #16. 96 violent crimes were reported on-campus at Tech. When you couple that with the amount of violent crime Lubbock sees as a whole, I'm truthfully surprised Texas Tech isn't higher on the list.

#15: TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY

Tucked away just south of Austin in San Marcos, I attended many events at Texas State living there. I didn't realize though that it was one of the most violent campuses in America. With 98 violent crimes reported on campus, Bobcat Nation isn't behaving very well.

#9: TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE STATION

We didn't want to see any Texas school crack the top 10, but here are the Aggies. 116 violent crimes were committed on-campus at A&M, and College Station is a much bigger place than you would think. It makes you wonder how much is happening off-campus.
