Surprises? The 2016 CMA Awards had them, and this list of the Top 5 moments includes shocking wins, performances and the stories behind those performances. The 50th annual CMAs were truly a night to celebrate legends, but there were some very modern moments mixed in.

Beyonce's performance with the Dixie Chicks was no doubt the most controversial of the night, but it was a thrilling five minutes of television that almost seemed like a peace offering from the once-banned country trio. Some didn't think the pop-R&B singer belonged on the CMAs stage, but her performance was inarguably captivating, and it drew new viewers.

The Entertainer of the Year category was wide open. Garth Brooks ultimately won, and his victory makes this Best of the 2016 CMAs collection. Some thrilling moments that just missed? Carrie Underwood's teary-eyed acceptance speech and Brothers Osborne's big win for Vocal Duo. Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were also very good, but not quite good enough to make this video.

The CMA Awards were hosted by Underwood and Brad Paisley for the ninth time. Beginning with an opening medley and continuing through several dedications to artists that have since passed, the show paid tribute to the men and women who built the format. However, performances of modern singles like "Move" by Luke Bryan kept the show in the now.
