When Texas Skies Get Weird: The Cloud Phenomenon That’s Leaving Everyone Talking
The video at the bottom of this article captures something in the sky that I have never seen before.
Usually, the sky is either full of bright white clouds, or dark stormy rain clouds. I can't think of a time when I have seen them both together like this. What causes such a phenomenon?
Size and concentration of water particles
Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets that reflect sunlight. When the droplets are small and the cloud is thin, sunlight can easily pass through and scatter evenly, making the cloud appear white.
As the cloud thickens and the droplets get larger, sunlight has a harder time passing through, causing multiple scattering and darker clouds. When it's about to rain, the water vapor clumps together into raindrops, leaving larger spaces between the drops and causing the cloud to appear black or gray.
Sunlight
If there's no direct sunlight hitting the cloud, it may appear bluish because it reflects the color of the sky. Clouds can also appear black when they're at a high altitude and no sunlight reaches the bottom of the cloud.
Haze and Dust
Haze and dust in the atmosphere can cause clouds to appear yellow, orange, or red.
