If you love to read books, this is your weekend! The Wichita Adult Literacy Council Book Fair is this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Sikes Lake Center at MSU.

The Book Fair kicks off on Thursday evening (02.27.20) with a Sneak Preview from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. that allows you to get first choice from the thousands and thousands of books that will be up for sale. All teachers with an official Teach / School ID can get into the Preview night absolutely free, just show your ID at the door.

Pick a subject, they've probably got it. They've got everything from children's books to serious history and research and non-fiction books for adults. I've seen everything from art history to self improvement to science fiction and mystery novels. They call that last one Murder and Mayhem and it's got plenty of both to choose from.

While there is a $10 fee to attend the Thursday evening Sneak Preview, there is no charge to browse on Friday or Saturday. When you make your selections you'll go through the checkout line and pay no more than a dollar or two for each book you chose depending on whether it's hard cover or paperback. You can pay by the book, or buy a WALC Book Fair Bag for just $10 and fill it up. With a little bit of packing skills you can load that book bag up and get out the door with a year's worth of reading material for just $10. And if you're a really voracious reader you can take your book bag and go back through again.

My bag is usually filled with science fiction or mystery novels and you'd be surprised at some of the big name authors you'll have to choose from. Every now and then you'll find all three books of a trilogy together or find the missing book from your current collection.

The WALC Book Fair is this Thursday evening ($10), and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday (free). There are usually some deep discounts to be had by late Saturday, and the tables are restocked frequently throughout the weekend so there are still plenty of treasures to be found.

The Book Fair is one of the ways that the WALC continues their mission of empowering people to improve. All of the tutoring services they provide are free of charge to the students and the Book Fair is one of the fund raisers that allows that to happen.

The Wichita Adult Literacy Council has been helping people in our community make their literacy dreams come true for 37 years.
