Dang, it hurts me just to watch the footage at the bottom of this article. Any time you are riding with a big group of people, especially at the beginning of the ride when everyone is bunched up together, there is the chance that someone will go down and take a few riders out with them.

During last year's Hotter'N Hell Hundred mountain bike race, right as we were heading up the first steep hill, someone a few yards ahead of me took a tumble, which set off a chain reaction that led to about seven guys all ending up in a pile. I was just far enough back (Because I suck at riding mountain bikes) to avoid the carnage.

Bad Pile Up at 2025 Hotter'N Hell Hundred Caught on Camera

But man, at least that was on dirt. The poor folks in the video below took a spill right there on the pavement. The downed man and woman in this video are a married couple. The man suffered from pelvic fractures in three places. Although the woman felt that she may have broken her lower back, her CT scan came back clear, just a lot of bruising and road rash.

Events like the Hotter’N Hell Hundred are always a challenge. There are expert cyclists and first-timers riding side by side, all dealing with Texas heat that can top 100 degrees. That mix makes it easy for accidents to happen, especially at the start when the pack is the tightest.
