Oklahoma is familiar with multiple country artists from the Sooner State. But Oklahoma has had several other artists make it big in other genres. There have even been multiple successful bands from Oklahoma.
Oklahomans are familiar with famous bands from the state, like The Flaming Lips, Hanson, Kings of Leon, Hinger and Turnpike Troubadours.
Travel Oklahoma has a map indicating where famous musicians from Oklahoma are from, but some of them will be a surprise for Oklahomans. And there's also a few artists and bands missing from the map.
Below are five bands you didn't know were from Oklahoma.
Some of the bands below are all from Oklahoma, but others have roots in Oklahoma, which means maybe one or two of the members are from the Sooner State.
Sports
With over 1.7 million listeners on Spotify, Sports is an indie rock band that hails from Oklahoma City. When the tour, they can be found playing throughout the United States, Europe, various festivals and, of course, and various venues in Oklahoma. The band also shoots most of its music videos and album art in Oklahoma.
Color Me Badd
Most people will remember Color Me Badd from the 1900s. They're an R&B group from Oklahoma City that was nominated for two Grammy Awards. They broke up in 1998 but reunited in 2010. Their biggest hit was "I Wanna Sex You Up," which debuted in 1991.
BRONCHO
Indie rock band BRONCHO formed in Norman, Oklahoma, in 2010. The band has 432.7K monthly listeners on Spotify. Several of their songs have been featured on HBO, such as the series Girls, the Netflix show Santa Clarita Diet, and Reservation Dogs, the Oklahoma-based show on FX.
OneRepublic
This one was a bit of surprise on the Oklahoma music map. But it's not the whole band that's from Oklahoma. The lead singer, Ryan Tedder, hails from Tulsa. He not online sang for OneRepublic, but has made an extensive career out of songwriting and producing for other artists, such as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, the Backstreet Boys and more.
LANY
Another band that's not necessarily from Oklahoma, but its lead singer hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Paul Klein is the frontman of the indie alt-pop band. LANY has five top albums and 7.5 million listeners on Spotify. Listeners might know them from their 2015 hit "ILYSB," which received an platinum certification. The band is currently on a world tour for its 2023 album "a beautiful blur."
