Could Dallas not have a single sport of the big four within city limits?

Back in December of 2023, rumors started circulating about the Dallas Mavericks moving out of their current home at American Airlines Center. They planned to build their own stadium somewhere in North Texas and they have stated those plans do not involve the Dallas Stars. Looks like the Stars could be out as well.

Dallas Morning News Reporting Stars May Be Out of Dallas

Over the weekend, Dallas Morning News reporter Lia Assimakopoulos, ran the following story about the Stars also leaving the American Airlines Center in 2031 with the Mavericks. Both teams leases are up that year and it looks like both teams want to build their own separate stadiums in North Texas. According to Lia, Plano is the current leading candidate for the Dallas Stars new stadium. Other options include Frisco, The Colony, Arlington, and Fort Worth.

What's Wrong With American Airlines Center?

Technically, nothing. By the time this lease is up for both teams. The arena will be thirty years old. Of course we have arenas that are older than this facility, but they have historical significance in sports. Like Madison Square Garden in New York or the Boston Garden. Both much older facilities. Looks like both the Mavericks and Stars want to build a full entertainment district that they own outside the arena as well.

The city of Dallas owns PNC Plaza outside of American Airlines Center. So if you visit one of those bars or restaurants outside of the venue, the Stars/Mavericks make no money on that. The Stars want to own a lot of land and make revenue outside of the arena as well. Similar to what the Braves have done with what they call 'The Battery' pictured above. It has 23 bars and or restaurants on that property, that generate revenue for the Braves even on non-game days. The Stars want something like that for themselves and it sounds like the Mavericks do as well.

In all honesty? I would keep the Stars in Dallas. Tear down the current American Airlines Center and build something brand new there for the team. Make a deal with the city of Fort Worth to play at Dickies Arena while the new one is being built and go back to that new arena once completed. From what it sounds like, the Stars want that entertainment district and I don't know if the city of Dallas can give that to them.

Arlington Next Best Option?

I love it when a city has all their major sports facilities right next to each other. The old ballpark in Arlington could make for a great new arena for the Stars if they want to tear it down. Honestly give me Frisco or The Colony over Plano. That legit sounds like the worst option, but if they're giving the Stars the best deal. That maybe what they have to do.

We will have to wait and see what the future holds, but it sounds like in 2031. No major sports team will be playing in Dallas, Texas.
