Brine Being Put Down on Wichita Falls Roadways
TxDOT is working hard to prevent snow on the roadways before it potentially builds up tomorrow morning as some forecasts are predicting. Brine is actually a mix of salt and water that goes down on the highway before it snows. The salt dissolved in the water lowers its freezing point, allowing it to remain liquid at colder temperatures.By preventing ice from forming in the first place, brine can significantly reduce the amount of salt needed compared to traditional deicing methods.
You're Probably More Familiar with De-Icing Methods
Traditionally, we used to lay salt down before the storm like on a truck seen above. The good thing is with this brine treatment. We use significantly less salt and is actually a better per-treatment for preventing ice before it starts to buildup. It's estimated that the old school salt rock methods, 30% of it would end up getting blown off the road. You can read more on the brine treatment method here if you want more.
