Morgan Wallen generated buzz last November when he cut a cover of Jason Isbell's "Cover Me Up" for Taste of Country's RISERS series — a cover so powerful it was shared and admired widely, even by non-country fans.

To date, the "Cover Me Up" recording — taped live in studio — has racked up 2.5 million views on YouTube.

Fans were quick to comment that they needed an official version ASAP, as they were bluetoothing the video to their car speakers. Wallen has finally granted their wish. The "Up Down" singer dropped a digital version of the song on Thursday (April 4).

Isbell is a tough act to cover — the four-time Grammy winner has such a distinct sound and powerful voice it must have been daunting. "Cover Me Up" is also a departure from Wallen's typical sound, but he sings it as if he wrote it — as if he lived it.

Wallen's songs "The Way I Talk" and "Whiskey Glasses" fall on the Jason Aldean side of country, but "Chasin’ You," and now this cover showcase a softer, more introspective side that fans are really responding to.

Wallen did the song justice by staying true to the original sound, with his husky drawl adding a fresh take on the track from Isbell's 2013 album, Southeastern.

Having worked with Florida Georgia Line, and joining Luke Combs on the Beer Never Broke My Heart Tour this fall, Wallen is being noticed by the biggest names in country music and earning his place among them.

Whether he decides to stay true to his roots or move in the direction of Isbell is yet to be seen. His debut album, If I Know Me, is out now.
