My first year attending the University of North Texas in Denton was 1995, which is a significant year in the history of their football program. The 1995 Mean Green football team played UNT's inaugural season in its return to Division I-A.

If you don't know what that means, it's that basically they moved up into a much harder division. The hardest college division, that is, where all the teams you know and love play. The Mean Green finished the season with a 5-6 overall record and a 3-4 record in conference play. In other words, we were not good.

UNT earns first AP Top 25 ranking since 1959 at No. 22

Look, it's to be expected that a team is going to struggle when they move up to harder competition. So, we didn't have a winning season the entire time I attended, which led to me just not caring that much about North Texas football. All these years later, my friends who attended colleges like UT and Texas A&M have so much pride in their teams every year, it's nauseating.

Ok, it's jealousy, but jealousy makes me nauseous.

But man, this year's team has been fun to watch. This is the first time in 30 years I have sought out UNT football on TV every Saturday, and it's been great.

Maybe, just maybe, this the the start of something special. Denton is probably my favorite city in Texas, and it deserves some school spirit after all this time.
