As much as we needed all the recent rain we have been getting in Wichita Falls, it does come with one major inconvenience. The mosquitoes are going crazy. But we have help!

The Health District's Vector Control team is performing ultra-low volume (ULV) adult mosquito spraying during the evening and early morning. These are the times when mosquitoes are most active. Spray zones are selected using a combination of trap surveillance, citizen reports, and historical data.

Health District Tackles Wichita Falls Mosquito Spike

To suppress mosquito populations at their source, teams apply larvicides to standing water in ditches, gutters, containers, and flood-prone areas, preventing larvae from maturing into adults.

While no recent West Nile Virus cases have been reported in Wichita County, the program actively traps mosquitoes and tests for disease agents like West Nile, St. Louis encephalitis, and equine encephalitis.

Zone-by-Zone Spray Map

The Vector Control Program updates a color-coded spray map every Tuesday, ranking each of the 47 zones in Wichita County by priority:

  • Emergency – disease-positive traps (like West Nile)
  • High–trap counts over 25 female Culex per night
  • Priority – many citizen reports
  • Low–zones recently sprayed

You can view the latest interactive map on the city’s Vector Control webpage to see if your area is scheduled for spraying.
