In the early hours of the morning this past Monday, the sky got really dark, and thunder started rumbling. Before anyone knew it, hail started falling from the sky like crazy. Twitter user Alerta Mundo whipped out their phone and caught all the action as it was going down.

Protecting your car from hail damage involves proactive measures. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Stay Informed: Keep track of weather forecasts, especially during hail season. If severe weather is predicted, try to park your car in a covered area if possible.
  • Use a Car Cover: If you don't have access to covered parking, consider using a car cover designed to protect against hail. Make sure it fits snugly to prevent wind from blowing it off.
  • Seek Shelter: If you're caught in a hailstorm while driving, seek shelter immediately. If there's no shelter nearby, pull over to a safe area away from trees and power lines and stay inside your vehicle.
  • Park Strategically: When parking, look for structures that can provide protection, such as covered parking garages, carports, or even large buildings with overhangs.
  • Cover with Blankets or Mats: If you're unable to find covered parking during a hailstorm, use thick blankets, mats, or even cardboard to cover your car's windows and body panels.
  • Install Hail Guards: Consider installing hail guards or hail protection systems on your property to shield your car from hail damage when parked at home.
  • Insurance Coverage: Make sure your car insurance policy includes comprehensive coverage, which typically covers hail damage. Review your policy to understand the extent of your coverage.
  • Inspect and Repair Damage Promptly: After a hailstorm, inspect your car for any damage and have it repaired promptly to prevent further issues like rusting or corrosion.

By taking these precautions, you can minimize the risk of hail damage to your vehicle and potentially save yourself from costly repairs.
