Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar says that about 3.2 million houses sit right on the edge of undeveloped land, which is the area where wildfires can spread quickly. If conditions get too hot and dry, those areas could see serious fires, just like the ones that have devastated parts of California.

The Texas A&M Forest Service wants people to take action now before wildfires start. They’re giving simple tips that can help keep homes safer. First, clear your roof and gutters of dry leaves and sticks. Those can easily catch fire if embers land on them. Also, don’t let flammable stuff like piles of leaves or wooden mulch sit close to your home’s walls. That just gives a fire more fuel. Finally, avoid storing things under decks or porches. Fires can spread underneath them and quickly take over your house.
