Almost a year and a half after approval, light poles are being installed Downtown today!

Back in May 2024, the City Council voted unanimously to approve nearly $800,000 for new light fixtures throughout downtown. The funding, drawn from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, is set to cover not only the lamp posts themselves but also the underground wiring needed to power them.

New Lighting Downtown Improves Aesthetics and Safety

The total cost for the project is $744,998. That covers both the light poles themselves and the work to put wiring under the sidewalks. City leaders say better lighting will make streets easier to see at night for drivers and people walking, and it will also help businesses downtown that stay open after dark.

Downtown Wichita Falls has been going through a lot of updates in recent years. New restaurants, events, and art projects have brought more people into the area. Adding new lights is part of the city’s plan to keep improving downtown and make it a place where people want to spend time.

I, for one, am really excited about this. There are a couple of spots downtown that have needed better lighting, and it looks as if these poles are going up in just the right spots. Hooray for Downtown Wichita Falls!
