University of Texas Rolls Out Lamborghinis for New Recruits
The University of Texas just pulled out all the stops to woo recruits. A fleet of Lamborghinis and other luxury automobiles was parked on the field so that potential new players could give them a test drive.
So, how is this happening?
Well, it all comes down to a recent rule change called NIL. That stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. Before 2021, college athletes couldn’t make money off their personal brand while playing sports. That meant even if a football player was super popular and had tons of followers on Instagram or TikTok, they couldn’t get paid for it. But now, thanks to the new NIL rules, student-athletes can make money through things like sponsorship deals, endorsements, and promotions, just like pro athletes.
Lamborghini Deal Helps UT Land Top Recruits
A Lamborghini dealership in Austin made a deal with UT football recruits. It works like this: the dealership gives some of these players a chance to lease (basically rent) a Lamborghini to drive around town. In return, the players post about the dealership on social media or show off the car at events, helping promote the business. It’s a “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” type of deal. The players get to drive awesome cars, and the dealership gets free advertising to a younger crowd.

Of course, not everyone is a fan of this trend. Some people feel like college sports are becoming more about money than the actual game. To these people, I say this: Shut up, nerds. Let these kids benefit from all the revenue they produce.
